Smart Monitoring for Efficient Water and Energy Management
Nexis implemented a comprehensive smart water and energy measurement solution in a residential development within a golf course in Los Cabos, Mexico. This initiative involved replacing traditional meters with advanced devices that transmit real-time data using LoRaWAN technology, enabling centralized management through Datacake.
Solution Components
Smart/Ultrasonic Water Meters
The project utilized Axioma QALCOSONIC W1 - SMART ULTRASONIC WATER METERS, which use ultrasonic technology for precise measurements, reverse flow detection, and water temperature monitoring. These meters transmit real-time data via LoRaWAN.
Smart Energy Meters (LoRa)
Vision Metering VM-2ETZ2 digital meters were used to measure energy consumption in the development’s villas. These devices also transmit data via LoRaWAN.
Kerlink iBTS 64 Highway LoRaWAN Gateways
These gateways provide wireless network coverage for the secure transmission of water and energy consumption data.
Smart Water Monitoring
The implemented solution ensures precise measurement of each household's water consumption within the residential complex, guaranteeing accurate billing for every homeowner. Thanks to this solution, discrepancies ranging from 400 to 700 cubic meters of unbilled water were detected due to the inaccuracy of traditional meters.
By integrating Axioma sensors and real-time monitoring through Datacake, the complex administrators were able to correct these inconsistencies and ensure precise billing. The modernization of the measurement system now guarantees efficient and transparent water consumption management, preventing financial losses for the residential management company and the golf course.
One Platform for Smarter Cities: Integrating IoT for Seamless Operations
The solution also enables precise monitoring of electricity consumption in each of the 33 villas in the residential complex, allowing for detailed control of domestic energy use. Additionally, energy meters were installed in shared areas of the development, making it possible to track consumption in key spaces such as maintenance areas, offices, restaurants, and golf carts, among others.
With Datacake integration, the complex administrators can access real-time data, allowing them to analyze consumption patterns and optimize energy usage throughout the development.
Implementation and Training
The project involved the installation of 40 water meters and 33 energy meters, replacing traditional devices that had failures and did not accurately record consumption. To ensure successful implementation, Nexis trained the residential complex administrators on how to use Datacake, enabling them to access and manage consumption data through intuitive dashboards.
Additionally, dashboards can be easily shared with a simple QR code, facilitating real-time access to information.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability
One of the most significant impacts of this solution was the improvement in measurement accuracy for water consumption. Given that the project is located in Los Cabos, a desert region where responsible water use is crucial, this technology allows for the monitoring of consumption patterns and the detection of significant variations over time.
