How Datacake protects against hearing loss with affordable LoRaWAN sensors
In a customer project we have implemented a setup using low-cost loudness sensors to measure noise levels in industrial production.
Background
In many manufacturing companies, noise is a problem. Large machines and corresponding production processes lead to a strong and constant noise pollution. However, the latter in particular is dangerous for the human ear.
If short peaks in volume occur and the general exposure is kept within limits, the risk of hearing loss is reduced. What makes it interesting, however, is the background exposure.
Installation of the Datacake LoRaWAN Gateway
The starting point is the installation of the Datacake LoRaWAN Gateway, which we positioned at a suitable location in the customer's production hall.
No Programming required
The Gateway comes with cellular connectivity and therefore does not require the in-house IT department. There is no need to configure an IP address, and all that is required for startup is a freely available power socket.
After start-up, the gateway connects independently to the Datacake platform and from then on builds a LoRaWAN network throughout the entire production area.
Installation of the noise sensors
Now follows the installation of the noise sensors. The installation of these sensors is even easier, as they are fully battery powered and can be placed anywhere or mounted on a wall using adhesive tape.
Finally, the sensors have to be registered on the Datacake platform by entering a serial number. This is done either via the platform's web interface or via the smartphone app.
Once this is done, the measured values are already available on the Datacake platform.
Visual
Datacake is a low-code IoT platform and provides visualization and data logging for sensors, machines and other data sources.
In conjunction with noise sensors, it is now used to log the readings of the sensors over a long period of time.
Furthermore, the measurement data can be viewed at any time via an integrated database viewer and a dashboard always shows the current value in real time.
Alerting
Using simple rules based on the IFTTT principle (If This Than That), alerts can be created for employees. These employees also register to use the Datacake platform and can then be informed of increased noise levels via SMS.
