A Smarter Port: How Eiffage Énergie Systèmes INFRA Upgraded the Port of Antwerp’s IoT Infrastructure with LoRaWAN and Datacake.

The Port of Antwerp, one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs, partnered with Eiffage Énergie Systèmes INFRA to upgrade its IoT infrastructure. Using LoRaWAN and Datacake, they replaced the legacy system with a scalable, future-proof solution that supports a wide range of smart monitoring and automation use cases throughout the port.

Building a New LoRaWAN Network to Improve IoT Monitoring at the Port.

By mid-2024, it was clear that the port’s aging LoRaWAN setup had reached its limits. Eiffage’s mission was to migrate the Port of Antwerp from this outdated private network to a more robust, future-proof solution. The goal? Establish a modern infrastructure that could grow with new use cases and support smarter processes across departments.
To achieve this, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes INFRA, together with technology partners, designed and deployed a new LoRaWAN network using Kerlink iStation outdoor gateways, connected to the Actility LNS. The new infrastructure was fully integrated with the Datacake IoT platform, enabling centralized device management, monitoring, and data visualization.
A total of 14 gateways were installed throughout the port, ensuring strong and consistent network coverage. This foundation now supports a growing number of IoT devices and applications aimed at improving operational efficiency, infrastructure oversight, and rapid issue detection across multiple departments.

Use Case 1: Smart Life Buoy Monitoring for Enhanced Safety and Asset Monitoring

One of the most extensive implementations so far is the Live Buoy Monitoring System. The port uses Adeunis dry contact sensors installed on buoys to track their presence and location. As these life buoys are occasionally removed, whether unintentionally or due to theft, the need for reliable monitoring became essential.

With over 200 buoys monitored in real time, Datacake provides a live map dashboard where port staff can instantly identify missing or displaced buoys. If a device fails to report in time, an alert is triggered so the team can react before disruptions occur.

This simple but smart application improves port logistics and reduces losses, proving how IoT can make even the simplest elements of infrastructure smarter.

Use Case 2: Power Outage Detection for IT Infrastructure

Another key use case involves monitoring the electrical circuits that power the port’s IT infrastructure, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet networks across multiple facilities. During ongoing infrastructure work, it’s not uncommon for power cabinets to be accidentally shut down by staff or contractors. When this occurs, office connectivity is disrupted, resulting in a spike in IT support requests.
To address this, Eiffage deployed battery-powered IoT devices equipped with Socomec DigiWare current sensors, which report the power status every 15 minutes. If no data is received over three reporting cycles, the system automatically raises an alert.

Because these devices run on batteries and communicate via LoRaWAN, they continue to function during power outages. This allows IT teams to quickly identify the root cause of connectivity issues and take appropriate action.
This solution has become one of the most important use cases in the current IoT rollout at the Port of Antwerp

Why did Eiffage choose Datacake for their IoT Project?

For Eiffage, the most valuable aspect of the Datacake platform was its flexibility and openness. Originally selected to serve as middleware, Datacake quickly became a central component of the solution due to its ability to integrate smoothly with existing systems and processes.Key features that supported the project included:
● Open API – Enabled seamless connection to internal tools and custom applications● Custom Dashboards – Allowed teams to easily build visualizations tailored to specific use cases● White-Label Capabilities – Provided a fully branded interface for internal stakeholders, ensuring a professional and cohesive user experience● Quick Deployment – Simplified the setup process and reduced integration time compared to other solutions
This open and modular approach allowed Eiffage to use Datacake not only for data visualization and device management, but also as the backbone for connecting alerts and workflows across departments, all within a fully branded, easy-to-navigate platform.

Current Status and the Road Ahead

The Port of Antwerp is planning a large-scale rollout of over 800 IoT devices, with new use cases continuously being added as the network expands and demonstrates its value.
This project marks a major step forward in how one of Europe’s largest ports leverages IoT to optimize operations—from basic infrastructure elements to critical IT systems. And with Datacake as a foundation, that future is already taking shape.
