Smart City Air Quality Monitoring in Hamburg

How the City of Hamburg deployed 200+ LoRaWAN sensors across urban districts to monitor air quality in real-time using Datacake, reducing response times from days to minutes.

The Challenge

Urban air quality has become one of the most pressing environmental concerns for European cities. The City of Hamburg needed a scalable solution to monitor particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), NO₂, and CO₂ levels across dozens of districts: from busy traffic intersections to quiet residential neighborhoods and school zones.

Their existing monitoring infrastructure relied on just 12 expensive reference-grade stations maintained by the local environmental agency. While highly accurate, these stations cost over €50,000 each and provided only a sparse picture of air quality across the entire metropolitan area.

The city needed answers to critical questions:

  • Which neighborhoods experience the worst air quality during peak traffic hours?
  • How do green corridors and parks affect pollution levels in adjacent streets?
  • Are schools and kindergartens exposed to unsafe particulate matter levels?

The Solution

Working with a local IoT systems integrator, the City of Hamburg deployed over 200 compact LoRaWAN air quality sensors across the metropolitan area. Each sensor measures PM2.5, PM10, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure, transmitting readings every 5 minutes via the city's existing LoRaWAN network.

All sensor data flows into Datacake, where it is decoded, stored, and visualized in real-time dashboards. The deployment leveraged several key Datacake capabilities:

  • Multi-Tenancy: Different city departments (Environmental, Transportation, Education) each have their own workspace with tailored dashboards while the central IT team maintains full oversight.
  • Rule Engine: Automated alerts trigger when PM2.5 exceeds WHO guideline thresholds, notifying the relevant department instantly via email and webhook.
  • Public Dashboards: Select dashboards are embedded on the city's website, giving citizens transparent access to air quality data in their neighborhood.

Technical Architecture

The sensors connect to The Things Network (TTN) gateways deployed across Hamburg. Datacake's native TTN integration automatically provisions devices and applies the correct payload decoder, with no custom backend required.

Each sensor was onboarded in under 2 minutes using Datacake's bulk device import feature, and the city's IoT team configured all 200+ dashboards using a single template that was cloned across devices.

The Results

Within three months of going live, the deployment delivered measurable impact:

  • Response time reduced from 48 hours to under 5 minutes: Environmental officers now receive instant alerts when thresholds are exceeded, compared to the previous process of weekly manual reports.
  • 12 school zones identified as high-risk: Data revealed that several schools near arterial roads experienced PM2.5 levels 40% above WHO guidelines during morning drop-off hours. The city rerouted bus traffic and added green barriers.
  • 35% increase in citizen engagement: The public dashboards attracted significant media attention and citizen feedback, contributing to the city's Smart City transparency initiative.
  • 70% cost savings compared to expanding the traditional reference-grade monitoring network.

What's Next

The City of Hamburg is expanding the network to include noise level monitoring and water quality sensors in the Alster and Elbe rivers. All additional sensor types will be managed within the same Datacake workspace, providing a unified IoT platform for the city's environmental monitoring efforts.
