Solar Farm Performance Monitoring at Scale

A renewable energy operator uses Datacake to monitor 12 solar farms in real-time, detecting panel faults within minutes and increasing energy yield by 8%.

The Challenge

SolarGrid Energy operates 12 photovoltaic (PV) solar farms across Southern Germany, with a combined capacity of 85 MWp. Managing the performance of over 32,000 individual solar panels spread across remote locations presented significant operational challenges.

The existing SCADA system provided basic inverter-level monitoring, but lacked the granularity to detect issues at the string or panel level. Common problems included:

  • Underperforming panels: soiling, shading, micro-cracks, and degradation could reduce output by 10–30% on individual strings without triggering inverter-level alarms.
  • Slow fault detection: issues were often discovered only during quarterly on-site inspections or when monthly yield reports showed unexpected shortfalls. By then, weeks of lost production had already accumulated.
  • Fragmented data: each farm used a different inverter brand (SMA, Huawei, Fronius), each with its own proprietary monitoring portal. There was no single-pane-of-glass view across the entire fleet.
  • Manual reporting for investors and grid operators consumed over 20 hours per month of engineering time.

The Solution

SolarGrid Energy deployed IoT gateways at each solar farm that collect data from inverters, string monitoring boxes, and weather stations via Modbus TCP and RS-485. The gateways transmit aggregated data to Datacake via MQTT every 30 seconds.

Unified Monitoring Dashboard

Datacake serves as the single platform for all 12 solar farms, regardless of inverter manufacturer. Each farm has a dedicated dashboard showing:

  • Real-time power output vs. expected yield (based on irradiance data from on-site weather stations)
  • String-level performance comparison: underperforming strings are automatically highlighted
  • Inverter status and error codes
  • Historical performance trends with day, week, month, and year views

A portfolio overview dashboard gives SolarGrid's management team a bird's-eye view of the entire fleet: total power output, performance ratio, availability, and revenue projections.

Intelligent Alerting

Datacake's Rule Engine monitors performance at multiple levels:

  • String-level: if a string's output deviates more than 15% from its neighbors under the same irradiance conditions, an alert is triggered immediately.
  • Inverter-level: communication failures, overtemperature warnings, and error codes generate priority alerts.
  • Farm-level: if total farm output drops below 80% of expected yield for more than 10 minutes (accounting for cloud cover), the operations team is notified.

Alerts are routed via email, SMS, and a webhook integration to the maintenance team's ticketing system, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.

Automated Reporting

Monthly investor reports and grid operator compliance reports are generated automatically using Datacake's Reporting feature. Reports include yield summaries, performance ratios, availability statistics, and maintenance logs, formatted as PDFs and delivered via email on the 1st of each month.

The Results

After one year of operation on Datacake, the improvements were substantial:

  • 8% increase in overall energy yield: rapid fault detection and resolution meant that underperforming panels were identified and serviced within days instead of months.
  • Mean time to detect faults reduced from 23 days to 12 minutes: string-level monitoring catches issues that inverter-level SCADA systems miss entirely.
  • 20+ hours per month saved on manual reporting, as automated reports replaced the previous process of logging into multiple portals, exporting CSVs, and compiling Excel spreadsheets.
  • Unified visibility across 12 farms: the operations team now manages the entire fleet from a single Datacake workspace, eliminating the need to juggle five different inverter monitoring portals.
  • Predictive maintenance insights: by analyzing degradation trends, SolarGrid can now schedule panel cleaning and replacements proactively, before output losses become significant.

What's Next

SolarGrid Energy is integrating battery storage systems into three of their solar farms. The battery management data will flow into Datacake alongside the PV data, enabling a unified view of generation, storage, and grid feed-in. The company is also exploring Datacake's API to build a custom investor portal with real-time financial performance metrics.
