Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Monitoring with Datacake

The Challenge

NexisPharma Logistics distributes temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products (including vaccines, biologics, and insulin) across 14 European countries. EU Good Distribution Practice (GDP) regulations require continuous temperature monitoring throughout the supply chain, with complete audit trails and deviation documentation.

Before adopting Datacake, NexisPharma relied on disposable USB temperature loggers placed in each shipment. The problems were significant:

• Data was only available after delivery: by the time a temperature excursion was discovered, the product had already reached the pharmacy or hospital.
• Manual data extraction from thousands of USB loggers consumed over 40 staff-hours per week.
• No real-time alerting meant that a refrigeration failure in a warehouse or transport vehicle could go unnoticed for hours.
• Audit preparation for GDP inspections required weeks of manual report compilation.

The company needed a solution that could provide real-time visibility across warehouses, transport vehicles, and last-mile delivery, without requiring a complete overhaul of their logistics infrastructure.

The Solution

NexisPharma deployed Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) temperature sensors from a certified pharmaceutical monitoring vendor, paired with cellular gateways in each warehouse and transport vehicle. The gateways collect BLE readings and forward them to Datacake via MQTT every 60 seconds.

Warehouse Monitoring

Each of NexisPharma's 8 distribution centers is equipped with 20–40 BLE sensors placed in cold rooms, ambient storage areas, and loading docks. Datacake dashboards provide a real-time floor plan view of temperature distribution, with color-coded zones indicating compliance status.

Transport Monitoring

Every refrigerated vehicle carries a cellular gateway that maintains connectivity via 4G. Even during border crossings or tunnel passages, the gateway buffers readings and transmits them once connectivity is restored. Datacake's Rule Engine monitors each vehicle's temperature profile and sends SMS alerts to the driver and dispatch center if the temperature deviates from the 2–8°C range.

After 12 months of operation, the results speak for themselves:
