Datacake vs Ubidots
Datacake: an alternative to Ubidots with a built-in LoRaWAN Network Server
Ubidots is a dashboard-centric IoT platform with a rich widget library and tier-based pricing. For LoRaWAN deployments, Ubidots ingests data via an upstream network server (TTN, TTS or ChirpStack), meaning a second product to operate or pay for. Datacake bundles the LoRaWAN Network Server in the same product and ships 400+ device templates with payload decoders out of the box.
- Bundled LoRaWAN Network Server: no upstream LNS to operate
- 400+ device templates apply decoders, dashboards and downlinks for you
- Free starter tier with included device licenses
- MQTT and HTTPS ingestion for non-LoRaWAN devices

A side-by-side view of the platform capabilities that matter when you evaluate. We've kept it factual. Both products have their strengths.
| Capability | Ubidots | Datacake |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted IoT platform | Managed SaaS | Managed SaaS hosted in the EU |
| Bundled LoRaWAN Network Server | Ingests LoRaWAN via TTN / TTS / ChirpStack as upstream | Native LNS, included free in every plan |
| Device template catalog with payload decoders | PartialPlugin-based decoders and a community-maintained library | 400+ Datacake-maintained templates plus the LoRa Alliance / TTN device repo |
| Dashboard editor | Rich widget library, drag-and-drop dashboard editor | Template-driven dashboards per device type, with manual editing |
| Built-in rules / alerting | Events module with email, SMS, webhook actions | Email, SMS, push and webhook actions with escalation |
| Free starter tier | PartialSTEM tier for education / non-commercial; commercial use is paid | Free tier with included device licenses for production use |
| Pricing model | PartialTier-based per-device with credit / data-record consumption on top | Public per-device licenses; LNS and gateways free |
| MQTT / HTTP ingestion for non-LoRaWAN devices | ||
| White-label & multi-tenancy | PartialApp-level white-label on Industrial / higher tiers | Custom domain, theming and per-workspace branding |

Why Datacake
Where Datacake comes out ahead
One product covers connectivity and dashboards
Ubidots is a dashboard-and-rules layer that needs an upstream network server (TTN, TTS, ChirpStack) to receive LoRaWAN traffic. Datacake collapses both layers into one account: provision the device with its keys, the LNS forwards the uplink and the dashboard appears immediately.
Templates instead of widget assembly
On Ubidots a new device type usually means attaching a decoder plugin and assembling the dashboard widget by widget. Datacake ships 400+ device templates that pre-populate the decoder, the default dashboard and the downlink hooks: getting an unfamiliar sensor on screen is a sign-up away.
No separate data-record bucket to forecast
Ubidots tiers combine device count with a credit / data-record budget that needs to be modelled per dashboard refresh and per rule trigger. Datacake's licenses are flat per device, so the bill scales with the fleet rather than with how often the dashboards are looked at.
Migration without re-keying devices
Devices that currently reach Ubidots through TTN or TTS keep their identity on Datacake: same DevEUI, JoinEUI/AppEUI and AppKey, no firmware re-flash. The TTN integration on the Ubidots side is replaced by a direct Datacake LNS endpoint.
Honest take
When Ubidots might be the better fit
Highly bespoke dashboard widgets are central to the product
Ubidots' widget library and synthetic-variable language are mature and battle-tested. If your end-user experience hinges on very specific custom widgets that you have already built there, the migration cost may outweigh the platform delta.
LATAM regional support is a hard requirement
Ubidots is well established in Latin America with regional partners, time-zone-friendly support and Spanish / Portuguese documentation. If those factors are part of your procurement criteria, Ubidots remains a strong fit.
STEM / education use case
Ubidots STEM is purpose-built for education and small non-commercial projects with documentation tailored to that audience. For classroom or workshop deployments without a production angle, it is a natural choice.
